Mary Cox was born on August 4, 1946 in Liverpool, England to Florence and Joseph Cox. Mary was Florence and Joseph's only child. Growing up, Mary had an extremely passion for music and especially loved listening to Frank Sinatra records. When she grew old enough, she started hanging at numerous music clubs in Liverpool. She later met her first boyfriend, Johnny Brynn whose stage name was "Johnny Guitar", which she met at a club called The Cavern, which she frequently went to. Johnny was a member in a band called Rory Storm and The Hurricanes. Mary was fonder of another up and coming band that played at The Cavern, their band name was The Beatles. After two years of dating, Johnny and Mary broke up, and Mary began dating another guy named Peter Hepworth, he was co-director of Cavern Sound Ltd., the cavern Club's record club making section.
As much as Mary loved music, she wasn't into being the music scene. Mary really wanted to become a hairdresser and manicurist, and hoped that one day she would run her own beauty salon. Mary soon found a job as a junior apprentice at a local Liverpool salon called Ashley Dupre Continental Hair and Beauty Salon, and she attended beauty classes after work. Back in the '60's hairdressers would usually go by another name, so Mary decided to change her name to Maureen, but most of her close friends would just call her Mo.
As Maureen was heading to her hairdressing class she spotted The Beatles' new drummer, Ringo Starr, in his car. Ringo born Rich Starkey had replaced Pete Best and previously had played in the band, Rory Storms and The Hurricanes. Maureen had a crush on Ringo and ran after his car and asked if he could sign her exercise book. Ringo signed her exercise book and sped off. Maureen later wrote down Ringo's registration number in her class, so she could identify his car next time.
During one of Maureen's visits to The Cavern, The Beatles were playing. Maureen's friend bet that she couldn't kiss Paul McCartney, her friend's favorite Beatle, as The Beatles came out of their dressing room. Being Maureen never chickened out on a bet, Maureen went for it and got by with no problem and kissed Paul McCartney. Her friend was extremely jealous and bursted into tears. Maureen waited for her favorite Beatle, Ringo, to come out of the dressing room to give him a kiss, and she did.
